Dance and Technology


Introduction

Dance and Technology is a key factor in the dance program both for creative purposes and educational goals. The Dance Program has forged new territory with its innovative projects and programs that utilze different video and network technologies. Faculty, students, and staff have benefited from establishing relationships with different institutions and universities using technology both in the classroom and on stage.

The Dance Program continues to forge partnerships with universities and institutions around the world in order to bring greater resources and exposure to the students of the dance program.

Performance Projects

Kinetic Shadows

Created in 2002, Kinetic Shadows continues to be the presendent setting dance work that received its flawless premiere at the national meeting of the Internet2 Consortium.  In collaboration with the Cleveland Institute of Music, this work was performed with dancers and musicians on both the stages at Mather Dance Center and the University of Southern California's Bing Theater at the same time using audio and video transmitted via the newest development in Internet technology.

In Common Space

This dance work spread 6 dancers across three different cities (Cleveland, Gainesville, FL, and Miami, FL)  The structured improvisation represented the first time that AccessGrid, a new group video conferencing technology has been used by the dance program.  For the production of ICS during the Montage production, ICS was represented using High Definition Video for the simulated three studio.

Rehearsal/Classroom

Fields of Motion

Alumnae and Choreographer, Nina Nelson, set her "Fields of Motion" on the dancers of the dance program in 2006.  Using advanced video conferencing technology, she was able to conduct some of the rehearsals from her location at Western Michigan University with the dancers in Cleveland.

Steps in the Street

Faculty member Gary Galbraith set Martha Graham's "Steps in the Street" on the dancers at Washington University in St. Louis with the some of the rehearsals conducted via high speed video conferencing.  

Kinesiology

As part of the dance program's effort to expand its course offerings and expertise, parts of a recent Kinesiology class were taught by nationally recognized kinesiology teacher and alumnae of the program, Jane Baas.  Using distance learning technologies, the students were able to benefit from working with this noted teacher.

Research

Dancer Wellness Website

The Dancer Wellness Website, the world's only website dedicate to the analysis of dancer screening data, promotion of dancer health, exposure tracking, and dance injury monitoring, has been developed using the latest web-based technologies.  This website, housed in the dance program, is used by profesional companies, schools and universities around the world.

Production/Choreography

Students have benefited from using video, sound, and internet technologies in the creation of new choroegraphic works.  Students are able to collaborate with different artists around the world, share video, music, and share and learning in the creative and collaborative process.
